History

The World's Oldest Republic

San Marino claims to be the world's oldest republic, founded on 3 September 301 AD by Saint Marinus — a Christian stonemason from the Dalmatian island of Rab (modern Croatia) who fled Roman persecution, settled on the summit of Mount Titano, and established a community based on Christian principles. Whether the exact date is historical or pious legend is debated, but the continuity of San Marinese self-governance since at least the medieval period is genuine — over 1,700 years.

Napoleon's Rejected Offer

In 1797, Napoleon's army swept through northern Italy. Napoleon sent a letter offering to expand San Marino's territory and guarantee its independence. San Marino politely but firmly declined both offers, correctly calculating that accepting French patronage would end their true independence. Napoleon, reportedly impressed by their answer, left them alone. The republic survived.

World War II: 100,000 Refugees

San Marino remained neutral in both World Wars. During WWII it accepted approximately 100,000 refugees — an extraordinary number for a country of 34,000 residents. It was briefly occupied by Germany in 1944 and accidentally bombed by the British Royal Air Force, who later apologised and paid reparations.

Landmarks & Culture

The Three Towers

The Three Towers — Guaita (11th century), Cesta (13th century), and Montale (14th century) — perch along the three peaks of Mount Titano and are visible for miles. They appear on the national coat of arms, the flag, and essentially every piece of San Marinese imagery. Together with the historic centre, they form a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2008).

Two Captains Regent

San Marino is governed by two Captains Regent who serve simultaneously with equal authority. Their term lasts exactly six months, after which they must step down. Former Captains Regent cannot be re-elected for three years. On 1 April and 1 October each year, a formal investiture ceremony takes place — the outgoing pair hand authority to the new pair in a ceremony unchanged in its essentials since the medieval period.
