Bratislava — Capital of Slovakia
The only capital that borders two countries. Once the coronation city of Hungarian kings, then half of Czechoslovakia, now Slovakia's capital on the Danube — just an hour from Vienna.
About Bratislava — Capital of Slovakia
Bratislava (population 475,000) is the capital and largest city of Slovakia, sitting on the Danube river in the country's far southwest. It is the only national capital in the world that borders two sovereign states — Austria and Hungary. Between 1536 and 1783 it served as the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary and the coronation city of Hungarian kings, under the German name Pressburg and the Hungarian name Pozsony. After 1918 it became part of Czechoslovakia, and since the peaceful 'Velvet Divorce' of 1993 it has been the capital of independent Slovakia. Today it is a member of the EU and Eurozone, known for its compact Old Town, its hilltop castle, and its proximity to Vienna — the two capitals are only about 60 km apart, the closest in Europe.
