Indian History: From Indus Valley to Independence

Harappa, Ashoka, the Mughals, British colonialism, Gandhi, and 1947 — a guide to 5,000 years of Indian history.

India's recorded history spans over 5,000 years — from one of the world's first urban civilizations to the world's largest democracy. No other living civilization has such continuity. Understanding India's history is essential to understanding the modern world.

Key Periods

Indus Valley Civilization (c. 3300–1300 BCE) — One of the world's three earliest civilizations, with sophisticated cities, drainage systems, and trade networks. The script remains undeciphered. Major sites: Mohenjo-daro, Harappa, Lothal, Dholavira.

Maurya Empire (322–185 BCE) — Founded by Chandragupta Maurya, unified most of the subcontinent. Emperor Ashoka (268–232 BCE) converted to Buddhism after the Kalinga War, issued famous rock and pillar edicts promoting non-violence and tolerance. His lion capital is India's national emblem.

Gupta Empire (320–550 CE) — India's classical golden age. Mathematics (zero, decimal system), astronomy, literature, and philosophy flourished. Aryabhata calculated pi and proposed Earth's rotation. Nalanda University attracted scholars from across Asia.

Mughal Empire (1526–1857) — Founded by Babur, reached its peak under Akbar (religious tolerance), Shah Jahan (Taj Mahal), and Aurangzeb (expansion and fragmentation). Mughal culture — architecture, cuisine, miniature painting, Urdu literature — permanently shaped India.

British Raj (1858–1947) — Following the 1857 Rebellion, the British Crown took direct control. Railways, English law, and administrative unification came alongside systematic economic extraction and engineered famines. The 1943 Bengal Famine killed 2–3 million.

Independence and Partition (1947) — Mahatma Gandhi's non-violent movement, Nehru's leadership, and Jinnah's demand for a Muslim homeland resulted in independence and partition into India and Pakistan — accompanied by one of history's largest mass migrations and inter-communal violence.
