India Today: Economy, Tech & General Knowledge

The world's 5th largest economy, a space power, the fintech revolution — a guide to modern India's rise.

In 2023, India overtook China to become the world's most populous nation — 1.44 billion people with a median age of 28. It is the world's 5th largest economy, the fastest growing major economy, the first country to land near the lunar south pole, and the builder of the world's most widely used digital payments system. Modern India's rise is one of the defining stories of the 21st century.

The Digital Stack

Aadhaar — the world's largest biometric identity system — has enrolled 1.3 billion Indians. UPI (Unified Payments Interface) processed over 100 billion transactions in 2023, more than Visa and Mastercard combined globally. This "India Stack" — digital identity + instant payments + data layer — is being studied and adopted by governments worldwide.

ISRO and Space

In August 2023, Chandrayaan-3 landed on the Moon's south pole — making India the first country to achieve this, and only the fourth to land on the Moon at all. The mission cost approximately $75 million, a fraction of comparable NASA missions. India's frugal space engineering is a source of immense national pride and global attention.

The Economy

India's IT sector (Infosys, TCS, Wipro, HCL) generates over $200 billion annually in services exports. The country is now the world's largest manufacturer of smartphones (Apple makes iPhones in India) and is building semiconductor fabs. India's GDP is projected to overtake Japan and Germany to become the world's 3rd largest economy by the early 2030s.

Politics

Narendra Modi's BJP has governed since 2014, winning three consecutive general elections. India's 2024 election saw 970 million eligible voters — more than the entire population of Europe — vote across 7 phases over 6 weeks. The BJP won a reduced majority, requiring coalition partners for the first time in Modi's tenure.
